Snapdragon Hat Free Crochet Pattern

This pattern will work with any yarn, and any hook. It is a top down hat that depends on multiples instead of gauge. It is worked with the snapdragon stitch, for my example I used an I (5.5 mm) hook and Caron Jumbo in Rose.

Key (U.S. Terminology)

Dc=double crochet
Ch=chain
Sl st=slip stitch

Notes
Chain 3 counts as a stitch, and chain 4 counts as 1 stitch plus chain space.
V-stitch is 1 dc, Ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch.
Shells are worked as 5 dc's in one stitch.
All beginning and end shells are worked as 3dcs into ch-spaces.

Pattern

Make a magic circle, or ch 4 and sl st together.
Round 1: ch 3, 11 dc into magic circle, Sl st together.
Round 2: Ch 3, DC into same st, 2dc into each st, sl st together  (24 sts)
Round 3: ch 3, 2dc into next st *1 DC into next st, 2dc into next st* repeat to end of round, sl st together.
(Keep increasing to desired width, such as 6.5 for teen/small adult)
Round 4 (after increases are done): ch 4, DC into same st  (first v-stitch), skip next 3 sts, 5dc in next st *skip next 3 sts, v-stitch into next st, skip 3, 5dc into next* repeat to end of round, sl st together.
Round 5: ch 3, 2dc into ch-space, v-stitch into the top of the shell *5dc into ch-space, v-stitch into top of shell* repeat to end and sl st together.
Round 6: ch 4, DC into same st, 5dc into ch-space *v-stitch into top of shell, 5dc into v-stitch* repeat to end of round, sl st together.
Repeat rounds 5 and 6 until desired length is reached.

Parenting and Crafting

The best day of my life was welcoming my little dude into this world almost a year ago, but as he becomes more mobile, I struggle to find time to craft. Combine this with my imminent return to the workforce and this mama has been stressed! I've been trying to think of what I'll be making to keep myself warm while I work, because I am literally always cold. What should be almost done is getting made in stolen minutes and hours way past my bedtime, but, it's getting done. I'm making a short sleeved, hooded sweater and I'm so happy with how it's turned out so far! I'm savoring my time with my son as a baby, but I'll admit that I'm looking foward to him getting older. I cannot wait to make crafts with him, and teach him, and most of all, I can't wait to watch him grow. My sweater will come together in due time, but my son growing happens in the blink of an eye. Alas, I must chase my tiny terror.
